Does this scenario sounds familiar? You frequently skip breakfast because you aren’t hungry or you’re trying to lose a few lbs so you shun all snacks. You try your best to eat well all day but then that 3pm hour hits and bam, you want to eat EVERYTHING in sight! You have a ‘snaccident’, and eat an entire bag of chips. What the heck happened?! Then since your day of clean eating was ruined, you figure you might as well eat what you want the rest of the day. This cycle often repeats itself.
So here’s why this approach makes it so hard to eat well…While we are under the impression that just eating less and skipping meals will help us be healthier and lose weight, this approach often backfires. Bottom line- our bodies need fuel throughout the day to keep our blood sugar consistent and metabolism going. Snacking on healthy mini meal portions, should be used as a tool to help you make it to your next meal.
The other benefit is to help us avoid that overly hungry state when we want to eat everything in sight. Most often if you are not hungry for breakfast it means you are eating more than you need to at night before bed. Balancing your calories out during the day will help keep your body fueled with the nutrition it needs.
The ideal snack contains some healthy protein/fat and produce and is around 150-200 calories.
